More Paint & Pour Classes!

We are hosting more classes in our fun series of events, that we are calling "Paint & Pour."

As explained in our last post, these are classes are three hours long, are held on a weekday evening, and are taught by one of our gallery artists. Each class has a different theme, one image is taught at each class and is chosen by the artist. Each class is limited to 16 participants which means that our artist will be able to give each guest one on one instruction. Because of the small size of each class, we encourage our guests to sign up with their friends to make sure that everyone gets a seat! ArtSource's "Paint & Pours" are as much about painting as they are about having a good time! We encourage you to bring along a tasty beverage and partake in the snake we provide.

Over the past few months, we have begun a series of classes that we are calling "Paint & Pour." These classes are short, three hour, sessions that are held during the week at our gallery and which encourage guests to sign up with a group of friends and bring their favorite wines (or beers) for a fun social evening. Guests create their own works of art with instruction from one of ArtSource's gallery artists and all supplies provided.

This month's featured artist at ArtSource is Beaufort's own Craig Gurganus. Gurganus has worked as an artist creating unique and playful sea creatures, bugs, and more from recycled surfboard materials since 1987. His creations are instantly recognizable and have found homes in many a collectors' homes around the country and especially in the homes of North Carolinians from the Triangle to the Outer Banks.

This special exhibition of works will be on display through the end of June.

Where Summer is Always on the Mind

This week has brought the first of the hot summer weather to Raleigh and, coincidentally, a large collection of paintings that are sure to encourage a weekend trip the coast. North Carolinian artist Mike Rooney continues to impress with this new collection of coastal paintings, made en plein air from locations up and down the East Coast. Mike Rooney's paintings vary in subject, from quaint street scenes, to marinas, to marshes, to interiors, to the occasional novelty trailer camper. His paintings capture intimate snapshots into the often overlooked way of coastal life, away from tourist filled beaches.

After taking a lampwork glass bead making class in Aruba last December and again in February 2011, Nancy has found a new love – the ancient art of creating glass beads. It has become quiet an obsession as she is behind the torch on a daily basis learning and experimenting with the endless designs and combinations of colors. “you never really know what the bead will look like until it is fully annealed, and cleaned,” says Nancy. "New Beginnings" Exhibition Opening

The opening of "New Beginnings" last Friday, March 11 was one to be remembered. With eight artist featured in the show, and many in attendance, there was an excitement about the gallery. Each artist displayed five to ten new works, representative of that artist's style and ability to masterfully manipulate their medium. The exhibition features artists working in a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, and mixed media. The "New Beginnings" exhibition will continue to be on display through April 10. We at ArtSource are so excited to be representing all of these fantastic new artists and hope that you will have the chance to see this wonderful exhibition.

We would like to give special thanks to Sesha Gaston and all the folks with Sullivan's Steakhouse of Raleigh for their continued involvement and support of ArtSource at our openings. Their catering is always top notch!

The Curious Works of Susanna Pantas

At times bordering on fantasy, the works of Susanna Pantas are as detailed as they are intriguing. Her focus is often on singular items that might otherwise be overlooked. She brings out the fine detail and patterns found in natural items; items that one might have expected to find in a curiosities cabinet of a noblemen during 15th or 16th centuries. But it is not just the subject matter that make her paintings exceptional. Pantas' workmanship is phenomenal. Her ability to render what she sees in front of her and create it on a canvas, with such vibrancy, is what truly makes her works special.

January 29, 2011: Jason Cardenas Painting Demonstration

On January 29, ArtSource Fine Art Gallery hosted abstract painter Jason Cardenas for a painting demonstration in which he worked on two 36x36 canvases. Cardenas began by explaining his methods of preparing his canvases and the layering process he uses to build up color and texture. Working primarily in acrylics, Cardenas uses palette knives, putty knives and brushes to apply his paints as well as to later remove layers and expose parts of the composition which were covered. Detailing and lineal elements are often added using pastels and numbers or letters are created using various stencils and acrylic mediums. Cardenas' composition, when completed, are organic brilliantly colored compositions which seem to flux as the layered colors play off each other. Cardenas' is especially in tune to the balance in his compositions, of plains of color and bursts of lineal energy.

The accompanying exhibition of works by Jason Cardenas is on display through February 4.

Using Color in a Big Way: The Art of Carl Krabill

In the world of Carl Krabill, terming one of his works as small is relative. Krabill's landscapes are often large, dense patchworks of brush strokes of subdued colors inspired by scenes the artist has visited. Tranquil, yet impressive in size, Krabill's works warmly invite the view into them, inspiring and calling for contemplation. The viewer can find references to Krabill's influences, such as Mark Rothko's soft amorphous planes of color and the moody quality of various Philip Guston paintings.

Norma Murphy Returns to ArtSource

       Renowned painter Norma Murphy has returned to ArtSource! Murphy has work as a professional artist for over 50 years and has developed her signature style and a technical process, involving the use of various paper materials and acrylics, which she uses to create a three dimensional, multi-textural world on canvas that is all her own.
       Murphy's inspiration is drawn from her rural Appalachian upbringing and childhood memories, which come to life in her imaginative interior scenes, often featuring female figures in beautiful floral dresses, and her wonderful landscapes. Murphy has a long history of solo exhibitions and has participated in a plethora of community activities across North Carolina. Her work is featured in private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

Whimsy, Color, and Texture

The newest works by painter Jim Chapman at ArtSource are a continuation of Chapman's brightly colored landscapes and still lifes, inspired by his travels and surrounding. Chapman's still life paintings are heavily influence by his southern surroundings, with many incorporating hand woven sweetgrass baskets produced by local women around Charleston, South Carolina. Other works, like Chapman's landscapes, are dreamlike; depiction of vast expanses of farmland reminiscent of the Midwest. Chapman's use of color and desire to replicate texture draw the viewer into the image for further inspection and reveals the attention to detail which gives each of his works the illusion of a three dimensionality. Labor Day is already upon us and there are so many things to see and do at ArtSource that you won't want to miss! In September we are featuring two wonderful exhibitions, each of which have some fantastic events that we invite you to join us for. Currently on display is our exhibition of works by painter Suzanne Morris titled "Tarheel Territory." This exhibition features Morris' spectacular paintings from across North Carolina. Included in the exhibition are works, painted plein air, from the coast to the mountains. Morris will also be at ArtSource to demonstrate her techniques on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday September 12 from 1-5pm. The painting she creates each day will be given away to a lucky visitor. Register to win each day of the demo. The exhibition will remain on display until September 15.

You also won't want to miss the opening of "MemoryScapes," an exhibition of works by gallery artists Andy Braitman, Vicki Grant, and Don Mertz. At the opening of the exhibition on September 23, join the ArtSource staff to welcome the artists. The artists' reception will begin at 7pm, food and drink will be provided to guests. "MemoryScapes" will remain on display until October 24.

About Jason Cardenas: Featured Artist in "Layers & Textures" Opening May 14

Jason Cardenas has a deep appreciation of warm earth tones which inspired him to begin painting landscapes. The effort was to develop a style through experimentation with several types of brushes and pallet knives, to capture the texture and serenity of nature- a perfect harmony of balance and color. Later, he began painting still lifes to study the essence of light and shadow- the delicate way these elements compliment each other through an attraction of opposites.

Several years ago Cardenas' appreciation of earth tones and multi-media art led him into an introspective exploration through non-objective abstraction. He enjoys creating the illusion of multi-media using only oil paint, a variety of pallet knives, and other unconventional implements. Recently bolder colors have found their way into his works as he continues to grow and refine his style. It is a long process, but he sees each painting as a journey and learning experience that holds a specific place in time.

Since 1990, Anne Cunningham has been on an exciting exploration using metals such as copper, brass, and aluminum to create large and small free-form shapes. “Every day is an experiment,” Anne Cunningham says, and each day is about discovering new ways to texturize and shape the metals, layering with papers, weaving cut strips, applying inks, dyes, chemicals and paints. With no constricting boundaries, her work continues to change and evolve.

We also understand that purchasing a significant piece of art can be a big deal - after all, you will be looking at it almost everyday!

Our Approval Process
ArtSource's "Art on Approval" process is a breeze. All we do is take an imprint of your credit card (for security, in case you decide to take a trip to Brazil and never return! wink, wink), sign a little paperwork, load up the art, and you're good to go! We take Visa or Mastercard, but you can make your final payment in another manner if you wish (ArtSource accepts Visa, Mastercard, cash, or check). We're always one phonecall away if you have any questions - and of course, there is absolutely no obligation.

About Robert Thoren:

An avid proponent and practitioner of plein air painting, Robert Thoren has relished the opportunity to paint the Northern Virginia landscape, particularly the lush terrain of the Shenandoah Valley. A transfer from the West Coast, Mr. Thoren studied with teachers closely associated with the late Russian émigré impressionist Sergei Bongart, whose work was recently featured in a retrospective showing at the Frye Gallery in Seattle together with that of fellow emigres Nicolai Fechin and Leon Gaspard.

Like Sergei, Mr. Thoren paints in a sensual, impressionistic style emphasizing vivid color and the employ of dramatic brushstrokes. His artistic goal is to suggest spontaneity while maintaining a firm mastery of drawing and painting techniques. In his many still lifes, Mr. Thoren celebrates the Bongart school's focus upon color and its ability to transform everyday objects into scenes of powerful emotion.

Prominent abstract expressionist artist, Eva Carter, is one of the featured artists in our upcoming spring show "Expressions in Color" which opens on March 18th. Her work appeals to so many people and we thought our readers might like a chance to get to know this artist a little better, to learn about her inspirations and hear her own take on the creative process. Below is our Artist Questionnaire with Eva Carter. Enjoy!

Can you share your first memory of creating art?

I think I was about 13 when a family member gave me a small box of oil paint for Christmas. I didn't have canvas but, I knew it had a texture and the only thing I could think of was the back of "oil cloth". I covered a shoe box lid so it would look like a stretched canvas and I painted a candle, open book and a pair of glasses. I still have that painting.

What serves as your main motivation?
My motivation is to try to create a work that has expression through paint.

Do you have a favorite subject matter?
My work is nonobjective.

Favorite color?
My favorite color is red.

Do you listen to music while working? Watch tv? Work in silence?
I listen to Music when I paint. Lately I have been listening to Phillip Glass, Cold Play and some blues. My all time choice is still Pink Floyd. I would say it is "Rock Opera". It has every emotion and is timeless.

Describe your studio space in 3 words:
Solitude, nature, view

What are your goals for your art?
My goal is to produce works of art that are the intuitive expression of my life experiences and share with the viewer. My greatest compliment is to have someone say my work makes them feel good.

Please give a brief description of your creative process and technique:
I paint with oil paint on canvas. I don't have any reference material such as photographs, sketches, etc. I face the blank canvas and start by breaking up the space using black paint. This starts a dialogue and I listen to what the painting tells me to do. I try to stay in that intuitive state using all the tools of the craft to produce a work that is satisfying, balanced and emotional. Painting is a process of decision making. I often feel exhausted after a few hours in the studio. I spend a lot of time just looking at the work before a brush stroke is applied. Each stroke must be sure and direct. I stop when I can't do anything to make it better.

Debbie Martin is one of the two featured artists in ArtSource North Hills' March exhibition, Expressions in Color, which opens Thursday, March 18th, from 7-9pm.

Debbie Martin's paintings are bursting with energy and spontaneity (a good example is the painting shown at left, "Blue Lagoon I"). Back in 2009, she took some time to answer our artist questionnaire and let us in on some insights about her journey as an artist and her creative inspirations. In anticipation of Expressions in Color, lets revisit her Q&A & get to know Debbie a little better:

Can you share your first memory of creating art?
I guess it would be drawing with the newest and biggest box of crayons. My first memory of painting was probably when I was about nine and I painted a portrait of my Mom when she was a little girl.

What serves as your main motivation?
I abandoned my dream to become an artist almost 35 years ago as a young student so my greatest motivation is that I don’t want to waste the time I have. Time passes so quickly and I look forward to each hour that I can spend in my studio and I don’t take it for granted. Two hours feels like twenty minutes when I am painting.

Do you have a favorite subject to paint?
I love to paint anything that references the warmth and glow of afternoon light…in the landscape or near the water.

Do you listen to music while you work? Watch tv? Etc.
Yes, I always listen to music when I paint. Sometimes it is just the country music on the radio. I also have a selection of CD’s that I play depending on my mood and what I am painting. I played the piano for years and music has always been very important to me.

Describe your studio in three words:
LIGHT, COLORFUL, TEMPORARY

What are your goals for your art?
I hope that my art will cause others to look beyond the obvious and open their mind and heart to seeing things in a new way. I challenge each viewer to notice how they feel when they view a painting. “Understanding” is not essential to the process but allowing one’s self to see with their heart is necessary to enjoying art.

Give a brief description of your creative process and technique:
I see things each day that may influence a painting. I often make notes or drawings to remind me of key elements that I want to use in a painting. Once I have created a composition I may use it in a different way on several canvases. Working in the studio daily is very important to my creative process. I use acrylic paint and a large tapered brush for almost all my work. As I paint I follow my intuition and let the painting develop. The painting develops from layering thin paint and using mediums as necessary to delay drying time. Acrylic dries quickly, so it works well for this. I often work on more than one painting at a time. It takes several hours for each piece and that may happen in a week or a month. It depends on the size of the canvas.

Rural NC Through Jane Faudree's Eyes

When NC painter Jane Faudree stopped by the gallery last week, she brought a new painting entitled "Flowers on the Fence," an acrylic on canvas measuring 36"x48".

This charming landscape, she told us, is of a scene located near Beaufort, NC. Full of soft colors and warmth, this particular painting captures a sentimental mood that reminds the viewer of times past where life was slower and pleasures were simple.

This exhibition takes a closer look at two of ArtSource’s most popular painters, abstract expressionist Eva Carter and expressionist painter Debbie Martin. Both are renowned for their large scale works on canvas, paintings that are brimming with energy, tension, and color.

Charleston-based artist Eva Carter became an exciting addition to ArtSource’s stable of artists in 2009. Nationally-recognized for her colorful abstract expressionist oils on canvas, Eva Carter has been pursuing her calling for over 30 years. This experience shows in her consistent body of work which pulls much of its inspiration from her natural surroundings, although she does not paint the literal landscape. Her abstract interpretations of the colors, light, and ambiance that make up the world around her have been met with much success over the years, as Eva Carter has an uncanny ability to connect with her audience.

Debbie Martin, also a southern artist, lives very much in the moment and it shows in her work. The process of creating her artwork is almost as important as the finished result; and this spontaneity and honesty proves to be one of the strengths in her art. Emotion is evident. Debbie’s joyous persona is bubbling over into her expressionist abstracts and abstracted landscapes. Her color palette draws from the influence of the southern landscapes in which she is immersed – from earthy warm tones that mimic the iron-rich clay of our region to balmy greens that reflect the marshes and pastures of the south in summer.

Large Diptych by Jason Cardenas

Abstract painter Jason Cardenas has brought us this dynamic new mixed media painting, titled "Common Links."

Jason told us that it can be hung in a variety of different ways, as it is actually two separate panels. One panel is full of dark colors, strong lines and angular shapes, while the other panel consists of various tones of white and beiges in circular loops - although Jason snuck in a few of his characteristic small squares off to the corner. If hung side by side, the piece will measure 48"x72". We just love Jason's edgy style and bold use of color and texture.

ArtSource North Hills was proud to host the launch party for Uvo, Inc., a new luxury line of handbags and accessories, created by Raleigh designers Manal Affify and Gigi Karmous-Edwards. This debut of Uvo took place on February 7, 2010. We had initially scheduled the party for the week prior, but had to cancel due to all of the snow in Raleigh! The Superbowl didn't keep fashionistas away on February 7th & we had a fantastic time!

Haiti Relief - Donation Drop Off at North Hills

After the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, North Hills efforts will be paired with the efforts of Horne Memorial United Methodist Church in Clayton for Haitian Relief. North Hills will serve as a collection location for specific supplies that are needed immediately in Haiti (to see list of needed supplies, click here)

With missionaries and medical personnel from HMUMC already located in Haiti, there is an effective plan in place for disseminating the collected items upon their arrival. They will be continually collecting and shipping to Haiti.

North Hills will be collecting this weekend; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12pm-4pm in the Commons. Look for the bright yellow tents. In case of rain, the collection location will be moved inside the space located between Learning Express and Lenscrafters.
